We love a good party, and even more so when we are hosting our friends and family. As a child, our family celebrated every birthday with a homemade cake. In the pre-Pinterest era, our humble party tools included paper streamers, scotch tape and balloons. My aunt put on the best dinner parties. My dad was a master of the backyard barbecue. The food, decor and good company were the result of ho’okipa, the Hawaiian value of hospitality. When visiting our friends and family, we always brought a gift to share with the hostess and we ate every morsel that they shared with us. Giving and receiving hospitality is so much more than throwing a party. It's about celebrating moments with loved ones in a world that hurries by. Hospitality is about being present and valuing the presence of others.
